Dr Sophie Coulter
Clinical Psychologist
Dr Sophie Coulter is a clinical psychologist who has worked with children, young people and adults for over 15 years. Until recently Sophie worked at Great Ormond Street Hospital, primarily in oncology. Alongside IPC, she now works in a Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) in London.
Sophie provides specialist input into IPC’s Child and Adolescent, Perinatal, Physical Health, Neurodiversity and Cognitive Assessment clinics. She works with children and young people around concerns such as low mood, anxiety, trauma, pain, anger and relationship difficulties. Sophie is highly experienced in supporting parents. Working collaboratively, she offers space to think about the developmental, emotional and cognitive of milestones that children transition through and ways in which parents can adapt to these different stages of parenting. Sophie is skilled in supporting parents where there may be concerns around neurodiversity. Much of Sophie’s work involves liaising with multi-disciplinary professionals in the young person’s life to ensure that their needs are being met and being thought about in all the different areas of their life. Sophie has also worked across several health settings in both adult and paediatric teams. She works with difficulties such as anxiety, stress related to medical procedures, coming to terms with a medical diagnosis and the impact of a diagnosis on the young person and family.
Sophie takes a collaborative, creative and flexible approach to her work, aiming to listen and understand the needs and concerns of each individual and family she meets. She is a Video Interaction Guidance (VIG) accredited practitioner. She uses an integrative approach, drawing upon a number of therapeutic models including as Systemic theory, narrative therapy, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), attachment and trauma informed approaches.
