
Dr Catherine Hunter, BSc(Hons), DClinPsy
Dr Catherine Hunter is a Clinical Psychologist and has worked for NHS services with children, adolescents, and their families for over 10 years. She currently holds a post in a central London Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service working as the Parenting Provision Lead. In this role she offers support to young people, working with families in their journeys following diagnosis of developmental delay and Autism.
Her work draws on a number of approaches including systemic and psychodynamic theory, and she uses narrative practice, cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) and short-term solution focused methodologies in her work.
Support to parents and networks
Much of Catherine’s work in the NHS involves working alongside the adults and professionals around the young person to ensure their needs are being met and they are being thought about carefully in different areas of their lives, this includes liaison with educational and social care settings.
Catherine is skilled in offering support for parents in the early years, understanding the importance of creating space to make sense of changing roles and relationships. She uses evidence-based interventions to help families and couples facing difficulties with attachment and bonding, challenging dynamics at home and adjustment work following diagnoses. Catherine also has experience of working with difficulties in the early years such as sleep, feeding, toileting and behaviours that can challenge.
Working with children and young people
Catherine works with adolescents and children to manage feelings of frustration, anger, anxiety and low mood. She works creatively to support young people to think about promoting positive relationships with peers and understand social communication difficulties. She works flexibly to offer the most effective intervention to understand and resolve difficulties. Catherine is skilled in adapting communication and using additional resources to facilitate understanding and access to psychological therapies.
