Dr Sophie Coulter

Clinical Psychologist

Dr Anna Galloway

Dr Sophie Coulter is a clinical psychologist who has worked with children, young people and adults for over 15 years. Until recently Sophie worked at Great Ormond Street Hospital, primarily in oncology.  Alongside her work across the age span at IPC, she also works in a Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) in London. She works with children, young people and adults around concerns such as low mood, anxiety, trauma, pain, anger and relationship difficulties.

Sophie is also highly experienced in supporting parents, including where there may be concerns around neurodiversity. Working collaboratively, she offers space to think about the developmental, emotional and cognitive milestones which children transition through and ways in which parents can adapt to these different stages of parenting. Some of Sophie’s work can also involve liaising with schools or multi-disciplinary professionals in the young person’s life to ensure that their needs are being met in all the different areas of their life.

As well as having extensive experience in helping individuals or families with emotional and mental health issues, Sophie has also worked across several physical health settings in both adult and paediatric teams, including Great Ormond Street Hospital. In these health settings and in her IPC work, she has worked with difficulties such as anxiety, pain and symptom management, stress related to medical procedures, coming to terms with a medical diagnosis and the impact of a diagnosis on the young person and family.. Sophie provides specialist input into IPC’s Child and Adolescent, Adult Mental Health, Perinatal, Physical Health, Neurodiversity and Cognitive Assessment clinics.

Sophie takes a collaborative, creative and flexible approach to her work, aiming to listen and understand the needs and concerns of each individual and family she meets. She is a Video Interaction Guidance (VIG) accredited practitioner. She uses an integrative approach, drawing upon a number of therapeutic models including as Systemic theory, narrative therapy, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), attachment and trauma informed approaches.
